Allegations Surrounding the Tragic death of an Infant in Louisville crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A heartbreaking incident has emerged from Louisville, where a 3-month-old infant has died following a fiery crash. The mother, 18-year-old Lyillie Pena, is now facing serious allegations related to this tragic event. According to reports from WAVE News, the collision occurred early Thursday morning on Newburg Road, just before 5:40 a.m.

Witnesses say a Dodge Dart rear-ended a Ford Escape, causing the Dodge to catch fire. When officers arrived, they found Pena outside the burning vehicle, cradling her critically injured child. While Pena had minor injuries, her infant was rushed to Norton Children’s Hospital but sadly succumbed to injuries later that morning.

The driver of the Ford Escape recounted a harrowing experience, describing how he was stopped at a red light when he saw Pena’s car approaching at high speed. The impact sent his SUV into a grassy median. After the crash, the driver described Pena as aggressive, noting her glossy eyes and the smell of alcohol on her breath.

Pena reportedly admitted to consuming 99-proof alcohol the night before and taking Adderall. She has since been charged with vehicular homicide, aggravated DUI, and criminal mischief. Blood tests indicated a blood alcohol level of .039, which raises serious concerns about her state during the incident.

As investigations continue, the name of the infant has not been disclosed by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Pena is expected to appear in court soon, facing the gravity of the charges against her.
