Tragic Drive-By shooting in Ripley, Tennessee
RIPLEY, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) – In a heartbreaking incident, two teenagers were shot during a drive-by shooting in Ripley, Tennessee, with one of them tragically losing his life. Authorities reported that the shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the Northcrest subdivision, leaving the community in shock.
The victim who sadly died has been identified as 16-year-old Demarcus Barnes, a senior at Ripley High School and a dedicated varsity football player. The other teenager, also 16, was injured with a gunshot wound to the leg but is expected to recover. This senseless violence has raised concerns and emotions within the community.

In a heartfelt response, the athletic department at Ripley High School expressed their grief on social media, stating, “Some things are unexpected and can’t be explained.” A memorial has since been established outside the school to honor Demarcus’s memory, highlighting the profound impact he had on his peers and the community.
Lauderdale County Schools Superintendent Shawn Kimble also shared his sorrow, noting that such tragedies have become all too common in the region. He requested prayers for both the student body and the family of Demarcus as they navigate this difficult time. “We kindly ask for your continued prayers for our student body and the entire community as we cope with the tragic loss of our loved one,” he stated.
As of now, police have not provided any details regarding potential suspects in the case. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, and the call for peace and understanding echoes louder than ever.
