The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) penned a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the FDCI. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, inspiring generations.” This sentiment echoes the thoughts of many who admired his artistry and innovation.

Just weeks ago, Bal made a triumphant return to the fashion scene at the FDCI’s Lakmé Fashion Week, showcasing his stunning collection, ‘Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe,’ with actress Ananya Panday as his showstopper. Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, on May 8, 1961, Bal’s roots heavily influenced his creative vision. A graduate of St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi and trained at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), he burst onto the fashion stage with a solo debut in 1990.
Bal was also a pioneer in the industry, being among the first to patent and copyright his designs. His creations graced the bodies of global icons such as Cindy Crawford and Deepika Padukone. As the FDCI president, Sunil Sethi, shared the news of Bal’s passing, he emphasized the profound impact Bal had on the fashion world and how his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
