According to the Miami Beach police, the driver of a pickup truck was speeding when he veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with the motorcycle. The impact was so severe that it sent the motorcyclist and his bike flying nearly 90 feet from the point of collision. Bodycam footage shows officers rushing to the scene, desperately trying to assist the victim, who was conscious but unresponsive.
When officers questioned the driver, identified as 32-year-old Patrick Schiebel, he expressed concern for the injured rider, claiming he was “fine” but worried about the motorcyclist’s condition. Initially, Schiebel was allowed to leave the scene after being questioned, but four months later, he was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving.
During police interrogations, Schiebel allegedly stated he had been awake for over 24 hours and dozed off just before the crash. The delay in his arrest raises questions about police procedures, leading to an Internal Affairs investigation into the incident and the handling of the case.
The Miami Beach Police are under scrutiny for why immediate action wasn’t taken against Schiebel the night of the crash. As of now, his case remains open, and a trial is pending. The community is left seeking answers and justice for the victim.
