The tragic event took place on Sunday when a 29-year-old man, Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana, allegedly hit the family with his vehicle before fleeing the scene. Ramos has been charged with hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.

Aside from Jacob, his mother Angela Hernandez Mejia, their 8-month-old daughter, and their 6-year-old daughter Gianna were also injured in the crash. Angela and the baby have since been released from the hospital, while Gianna and her father remain hospitalized.

Angela spoke to NBC4 about the difficult decision she faces, saying, “Right now, I just have 24 hours I begged them for to just spend as much time as I can with him.” She plans to stay by her son’s side until she has to say goodbye, as doctors have determined that there is no brain activity.
