In the small town of Hope, Arkansas, a tragic incident unfolded on July 8, 2024, that left the community in shock. Bruce Lee Cockrell, a 47-year-old man with a Hope address, has been charged with capital murder and arson after the victim of the incident, Tonya Cockrell, succumbed to her injuries.

Emergency Response to the Structure Fire

At around 8:41 pm, Deputy Kyle Malone and Sergeant Derick Bunn of the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call about a structure fire at 5045 Highway 67 West. The caller reported that his neighbor’s residence was engulfed in flames and that a female occupant had been severely burned.

Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Malone and Sgt. Bunn discovered that the fire was actually at 114 Hempstead 1530, not the originally reported address. They were met by Fulton Volunteer Firefighter Clay Antley, who informed them that the female victim, Tonya Cockrell, had sustained second and third-degree burns all over her body.

Transportation and Medical Treatment

Deputy Malone observed that Tonya Cockrell appeared to have burns covering nearly 100 percent of her body. Pafford EMS quickly arrived on the scene and transported her to Christus St. Michael’s Hospital in TEXarkana. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Burn Unit in critical condition.
