Henderson Police Officer Shoots Gun-Wielding Man During Chase

HENDERSON, Nev. — A recent incident involving a Henderson Police Department officer shooting a gun-wielding man has sparked concerns in the local community. The officer fired at the man in his hand and shoulder out of fear that he would enter a Henderson home during a chase late last month, as revealed in a video briefing by the police department.

Details of the Incident

The pursuit commenced around 9 a.m. on June 20 after authorities received a distress call from a residence in the 1800 block of Ward Drive regarding a man with a firearm. An unidentified caller reported that the man, later identified as 33-year-old Michael Fretheim, had brandished a gun at him.

The caller, who happened to be an employer arriving at the Henderson home to pick up his employee, recounted the harrowing experience. According to Henderson Deputy Chief Itzhak Henn, a family member of the employee pointed a handgun at the employer.

Upon the arrival of officers at the scene, they found Fretheim uncooperative in a nearby apartment complex. Body camera footage released by the police captured the suspect fleeing the complex by hopping a fence and approaching a home near the intersection of Margarita Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard.

The Officer’s Response

Officer Tyler Travers, who has been with the department since 2017 and is part of the field operations bureau, made the crucial decision to shoot Fretheim as he approached the house, hitting him in the hand and shoulder. This marked the second officer-involved shooting by a Henderson officer in 2024, according to Henn.

Despite the tense situation, officers can be seen in the footage attempting to peacefully resolve the conflict. They urged Fretheim to drop his weapon in exchange for a bottle of water, demonstrating empathy and understanding in the high-pressure scenario.

Resolution and Legal Ramifications

Thanks to the crisis negotiation team’s intervention, Fretheim eventually surrendered and was safely apprehended. Henn praised the team’s efforts, stating that their ability to connect with Fretheim undoubtedly saved his life.

Fretheim now faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting a public officer. In addition, he is confronted with separate domestic violence charges, with multiple court appearances scheduled in the coming weeks.
