Violence Returns to St James: Triple Homicide Rocks Canterbury Community

Residents of St James were shocked on Tuesday evening as violence returned to the area after a month-long lull, with a triple homicide at a popular hangout spot across the main road from the Canterbury community in Montego Bay.

The tragic incident took place at a spot frequented by locals, where 25-year-old Antonio Williams, 17-year-old student Jaydon Bennett, and 62-year-old David West, all from Canterbury (12 ½ Upper King Street), lost their lives in a hail of gunfire.

According to eyewitnesses, the three men were part of a group at the hangout spot when gunmen suddenly appeared and unleashed a barrage of shots, leaving the victims fatally wounded.

One eyewitness described the chaotic scene, stating, “I heard the shots ring out and ran for cover. When the gunfire ceased, we went back to check on the men and found them lying lifeless on the ground.”

Canterbury: Once Feared, Now Gripped by Tragedy

Canterbury, a community that was once notorious for its high crime rate, had enjoyed a six-year reprieve from murders until the recent tragic event. The return of violence has cast a shadow over the neighbourhood, leaving residents fearful and on edge.

With St James leading the nation in murders, the latest crime statistics paint a grim picture of the region’s security situation. Westmoreland and St Andrew South follow closely behind in terms of homicide figures, indicating a worrying trend of violence across Jamaica.

As of the most recent data, the national murder toll stands at 602, representing a slight decrease compared to the previous year. However, the recent spike in violent incidents serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating crime.
