The Shiv Sena faction, led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, took action against Rajesh Shah, the father of Mihir Shah, who was involved in a fatal car crash in Mumbai. Rajesh Shah was removed from his party post as the deputy leader for Palghar district. The crash resulted in the death of a woman, Kaveri Nakhwa, who was dragged on the bonnet of the car for nearly two kilometers. Mihir Shah, suspected of being drunk at the time of the accident, was arrested along with his mother, sister, and family driver. The police have invoked charges of culpable homicide, rash driving, and destruction of evidence in the case. Rajesh Shah was granted bail, while Mihir Shah was remanded to police custody till July 16.

The victim, a resident of Worli Koliwada, was riding pillion on the bike driven by her husband, Pradeep Nakhava, who also suffered injuries in the crash.

Following the horrific crash, Mihir Shah attempted to flee the scene, with his father, Rajesh Shah, allegedly aiding him in evading arrest. The Maharashtra Police swiftly took action, arresting Rajesh Shah and their family driver, Rajrishi Rajendrasingh Bidawat, for their involvement in the incident. The police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and destruction of evidence against the trio, invoking provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.

In the subsequent legal proceedings, a Mumbai court granted bail to Rajesh Shah, while Mihir Shah was remanded to police custody until July 16. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate SP Bhosale expressed grave concern over the nature of the crime committed by Mihir Shah, deeming it “cruel and heartless”. The police highlighted the absence of the car’s number plate as a crucial piece of evidence and sought maximum custody of Mihir Shah to uncover any accomplices who aided in his escape.
