The Scene of the Incident
DC Superior Court Judge Heide Herrmann found probable cause that a shooting defendant fired shots inside of an apartment during a July 9 hearing. The incident took place on the 300 block of Anacostia Road, SE, a quiet residential area in Washington D.C.
Details of the Case
Dayquan Henderson, 22, faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence following a shooting that occurred on May 11. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the altercation.
According to court documents, Henderson, who was inside the apartment, engaged in a heated argument with two individuals outside. The situation escalated quickly, leading Henderson to allegedly fire shots at the victims, narrowly missing them. The victims managed to flee the scene unharmed.
During the hearing, a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) detective revealed that the witnesses were unable to positively identify the suspect, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
Court Proceedings
Henderson’s attorney, Michelle Lockard, challenged the existence of probable cause by highlighting the lack of clear evidence linking Henderson to the crime. Lockard argued that the surveillance footage did not provide a clear view of the suspect’s face or body, and no DNA evidence was found on the firearm in question.
On the prosecution side, it was noted that the witnesses, who were close relatives of the victims, were able to provide the suspect’s birth date, indicating that Henderson was indeed the individual involved in the shooting.
Ultimately, Judge Herrmann ruled in favour of the prosecution, ordering Henderson to remain detained pending further legal proceedings. The case is set to reconvene on July 12 for additional developments.
