A tragic incident shook the community of Sharon, Pennsylvania, as a 29-year-old man, Dashawn Dale Depree Watkins, was charged with homicide in connection with the death and dismemberment of a transgender teenager, Pauly Likens. The gruesome crime took place near a canoe launch in downtown Sharon on June 23, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit community.
The victim, Pauly Likens, was reported missing on June 25, sparking a frantic search for the transgender girl. Her father revealed that she had planned to spend the night at a friend’s house on June 22 but went out for a late-night walk to clear her mind. Tragically, Pauly’s last communication was a Snapchat post of a dark road at 2:30 a.m. on June 23, and she was never heard from again.
The investigation took a grim turn when dismembered human remains were discovered at Shenango River Lake in Hermitage, prompting authorities to delve deeper into the shocking case. Mercer County Coroner John A. Libonati confirmed that the remains belonged to Pauly Likens, with the cause of death determined to be sharp force trauma to the head, ruling the manner of death as homicide.
State troopers apprehended Dashawn Dale Depree Watkins on July 2, following a trail of evidence that linked him to the heinous crime. Surveillance footage from the area of the canoe launch showed Watkins entering and exiting the location where Likens’ phone last connected with cellular towers. Subsequent footage captured Watkins carrying a large duffle bag, believed to contain the victim’s remains, into his apartment building.

During police questioning, Watkins admitted to using the Grindr app to arrange a meet-up with someone he did not previously know. Despite the shocking details of the case, Acker stated that Watkins would not be charged with a hate crime, citing the defendant’s admission of being homosexual and the victim’s transgender identity.
