Tragedy Strikes at Manipur Relief Camp

Imphal, July 8: A heartbreaking incident unfolded inside a relief camp in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, where a 36-year-old man, displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence, was discovered dead on Saturday night. The deceased, Angom Premkumar, a resident of Tuibong area in the neighbouring Churachandpur district, was found hanging at his prefabricated relief house set up on the premises of a state-run sericulture project at Kwakta.

The reason behind his alleged extreme decision to end his life remains unknown, but the police have initiated an investigation into the matter. A team of Congress leaders, led by Girish Chodankar, AICC in-charge of Manipur, and Victor Keishing, Manipur PCC working president, visited the grieving family at the relief camp to offer their condolences.

Premkumar, a daily wage earner, left behind his wife and two children, a girl and a boy. The nearby Phoubakchao Ikhai police station responded to the incident, registering an unnatural death case and sending the body for an autopsy. The deceased and his family sought refuge in Bishnupur following the outbreak of ethnic conflict on May 3 last year.
