An 18-hour standoff in Elkhart, Ind., ended with a man in custody and a tragic loss as a 2-year-old child was found dead. Officers responded to a welfare check at a residence on Pendleton Drive where the man, armed and threatening harm, barricaded himself. Tragic Standoff in Elkhart Leaves 2-Year-Old Dead
Over the weekend, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in Elkhart, Indiana, as an 18-hour standoff came to a devastating end. The standoff began on Saturday night and lasted until Sunday afternoon, culminating in the arrest of a man and the tragic death of a 2-year-old child.
Police Respond to Welfare Check
On July 6, officers from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence in the 57000 block of Pendleton Drive in Elkhart County to conduct a welfare check on an adult male and his two young children. When authorities arrived at the scene around 9:06 p.m., they were unable to make contact with the man.
Deputies soon learned that the man was armed and had made threats to harm his children and law enforcement officers. The situation quickly escalated, prompting a response from the Elkhart County Regional SWAT Team.
SWAT Team Responds
At approximately 12:09 a.m. on July 7, the SWAT Team arrived at the scene to secure the area and make contact with the man. Despite their efforts, the man refused to leave the home and even fired a weapon before barricading himself inside.

As the standoff continued into the day, the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team was called in to assist with the situation. Throughout the morning and into the afternoon, multiple attempts were made to reach the man, but they were met with little success.
Tragic Discovery
Finally, at around 3:30 p.m., the Emergency Response Team managed to enter the home and apprehend the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Ryan Snyder. However, the heartbreaking discovery of a deceased two-year-old boy inside the residence cast a shadow over the resolution of the standoff.
Fortunately, a four-year-old girl was also found in the home and was treated at the scene before being released to a relative. Snyder was taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Elkhart County Jail.
