FIDE is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of GM Ziaur Rahman. The chess community has lost a talented player and a beloved member.
Ziaur, aged 50, tragically suffered a stroke during the 12th round of the National Chess Championship in Dhaka. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away on July 5, 2024.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ziaur’s family and friends during this difficult time. He will be remembered for his passion for the game and his sportsmanship on and off the board.
Ziaur’s contributions to the world of chess will not be forgotten. He leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of players.
FIDE is grateful for the time we were able to spend with Ziaur and will honour his memory in all our future events. May he rest in peace.
