From Grassroots to Glory: Supporting Filipino Athletes Every Step of the Way

As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, a sports enthusiast, and an athlete myself, I have always believed in the potential of Filipino athletes. I am a firm believer that with the right support, our athletes can bring home even more honor to our country.

Supporting our athletes from the grassroots level up to full status is crucial in helping them achieve their full potential. On June 26, the promise of financial support in the amount of P200,000 to each member and coaching staff of Alas Pilipinas Women’s Volleyball Team was fulfilled. This support, initiated by our committee and in collaboration with the Philippine Sports Commission, was provided following their bronze medal finish in the Asian Volleyball Challenge Cup. This financial boost will also aid our spikers in their preparation for the upcoming FIVB Challenger Cup.

Furthermore, on June 21, we were able to provide P500,000 each to our Olympians ahead of the 2024 Paris Games. This support was made possible through our partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission, highlighting our commitment to providing the utmost support to our Filipino athletes.

These incentives may seem small in value, but the impact they have on our athletes is immeasurable. It is essential to imagine the heights our athletes can achieve with consistent and focused support throughout their sports careers. This is why I authored and co-sponsored Republic Act 11470, which established the National Academy of Sports in New Clark City. This institution integrates secondary education with a specialized sports curriculum, providing aspiring student athletes with the necessary tools to succeed.

In addition, I am proud to have sponsored Senate Bill 2514, also known as the Philippine National Games bill. This bill, which has already passed on its final reading in the Senate, aims to institutionalize a comprehensive national sports program that spans from grassroots development to the national stage. Once enacted into law, this bill will further support our athletes in their journey towards excellence.

It is crucial for us as a nation to continue supporting our athletes and cheering them on with the battle cry, “Go for Gold! Laban tayo!” Our athletes serve as inspirations to many and remind us of the importance of staying active and healthy. As we continue to support our athletes, we also work towards a better future for all Filipinos.

My recent visits to various provinces and cities across the country reflect our ongoing efforts to extend help to those in need. From Masbate to Nueva Ecija, from La Union to Davao Oriental, we have been actively assisting displaced workers, impoverished residents, and graduating students. Our Malasakit Team’s efforts have not wavered, as we continue to provide assistance to fire victims, indigents, and various communities in need.

As your Mr. Malasakit, I am dedicated to serving you and our country with diligence and compassion. I firmly believe that by supporting our athletes and extending help to those in need, we contribute to the greater good of our nation. Let us continue to work together towards a brighter future for all Filipinos.
