A tragic incident occurred in Eagle Creek Township on Tuesday night, where a mobile home park fire claimed the life of a Lowell man, Richard Leoni, aged 67. The fire drew more than a dozen area fire departments to the scene in a desperate attempt to extinguish the blaze and save lives.
The Incident
At approximately 6:28 p.m. on June 18, the Lowell Fire Department received a distress call regarding a mobile home fire in the 100 block of Baldwin Road. The fire took place in the Apple Valley mobile home community, located in unincorporated Eagle Creek Township.

Upon arrival, firefighters and Tri-Creek EMS were met with a raging inferno and reports of a trapped individual inside the burning home. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the fire department immediately called for assistance from 13 neighbouring fire departments due to the advanced stage of the fire and the presence of a trapped victim.
The Rescue Efforts
Despite the challenging conditions, the brave firefighters of Lowell managed to enter the engulfed home, locate the victim, Richard Leoni, and bring him out. Tragically, Leoni succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene due to smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Lowell Fire Department Arson Investigation Division, Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire & Building Safety, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Crown Point Fire Rescue: Arson Investigation K9, Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Division, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
