A plainclothes MCSO detective was the first to arrive on the scene and witnessed someone firing a gun towards the playground, resulting in multiple injuries to a 17-year-old boy. The detective took action by firing at the shooter, who then fled north. Another detective was able to apprehend the suspect at gunpoint without further incident.

A second victim, a 15-year-old boy, arrived at the hospital shortly after with non-life-threatening injuries. The detective involved in the shooting, a 27-year veteran of MCSO, has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
