Tragic Incident Unfolds Near Dighori Toll Plaza in Nagpur

In a devastating turn of events near the Dighori toll plaza in Nagpur, a family from the Bagadiya tribe of Rajasthan faced a horrifying fate. The incident took place in the late hours of Sunday, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving 15 others injured. The tragic incident occurred when a car carrying six individuals, reportedly inebriated after a night of revelry at a local dhaba, veered onto the footpath where the family was sleeping.

Details of the Incident

The driver of the vehicle, Bhushan Lanjewar, a qualified fire engineer, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while driving a Hyundai Verna. His companions, all either engineering students or graduates, were identified as Vansh Zade, Sanmay Patrikar, Atharva Vanayat, Atharva Mogre, and Hrushikesh Choubey. Following the incident, they were arrested and charged under IPC Section 304 (II) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other sections. The group was remanded in police custody for two days until June 19.

Eye-Witness Accounts

According to eyewitnesses, Lanjewar allegedly drove the vehicle over the sleeping family multiple times in an attempt to flee the scene. Kavita Bagadiya, who tragically lost her husband, recounted the horror of the incident, stating, “The car drove over us and reversed, crushing us again, before speeding away.”

Victims and Injuries

The deceased were identified as Kantibai Bagadiya, 42, and Sitaram Bagadiya, 30. Among the injured, seven individuals are in critical condition at a local hospital, while the remaining eight were discharged after initial treatment. The injured family members include Sitaram’s wife Kavita, their daughters Haseena and Sakina, as well as other relatives from the Bagadiya community.

Police Investigation and Charges

Senior inspector Vijay Dighe of Wathoda police station confirmed that Lanjewar and his friends were intoxicated at the time of the incident. Blood samples from all six individuals have been sent for further analysis at the regional forensic science laboratory. The police identified the group’s activities as part of a birthday celebration at a local dhaba before they embarked on a joyride.

Legal Proceedings

Inspector Dighe mentioned that the driver was traced through CCTV footage and the vehicle’s registration details. The car has been impounded for thorough inspection by RTO experts. Despite the involvement of the vehicle owner, Saurabh Kadukar, no charges have been filed against him at this time. The police requested a five-day remand for the arrested individuals, but the court granted only two days.
