The Tragic New Plymouth Fire Incident
A fatal fire incident in New Plymouth has left the community in shock as details of the tragic event unfold. The incident took place in May 2022, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Emma Field. The accused, Leigh Matthew Frederick Beer, is facing charges of arson, murder, and assault with intent to injure in connection with the incident.
The Allegations Against Beer
The prosecution alleges that after a night of heavy drinking and drug use, Beer deliberately set fire to a mattress on which Field was sleeping. It is claimed that Beer then left the scene, leaving Field to perish in the flames. However, Beer has maintained his innocence, with his defense team arguing that the evidence against him is circumstantial and that someone else could have started the fire.
Expert Testimony
During the trial, the jury heard from specialist forensic fire investigator, Russell Joseph, who reconstructed the scene of the fire. Joseph revealed that the fire started on the mattress between 10.50pm and 10.53pm, with a naked flame being introduced to the flammable material. He ruled out other common sources of ignition, such as wall sockets, appliances, and candles, concluding that the fire was deliberately set.
The Tragic Outcome
Joseph also explained that once the fire started, it would have taken five-to-eight minutes to reach full ignition. Unfortunately, Field had little chance of escaping the room, as she was trapped between the overturned bed and mattress, and a dresser. Joseph noted that Field’s position indicated that she was either dead before the fire or unconscious during the blaze.
Defence Questions
During the cross-examination, Beer’s defense attorney questioned Joseph about the possibility of the front door being closed during the fire. Joseph admitted that he could not rule out the door being closed for a period of time, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
Final Thoughts
The trial continues as more evidence is presented to the jury. The New Plymouth community mourns the loss of Emma Field and awaits justice to be served in this tragic case.
