The International Olympic Committee (CIO) is set to expand its ranks with the proposed election of eight new members during the upcoming session in Paris on July 23rd and 24th, 2024. This decision was made during the executive committee meeting held in Lausanne last week. The list of candidates reflects gender parity, with four women and four men being nominated for membership.
Among the candidates are four individuals proposed as independent members: Aya Medany from Egypt, Sarah Walker from New Zealand, Paula Belén Pareto from Argentina, and Hugh Robertson from the UK. Additionally, three candidates have been put forward based on their roles as presidents of national Olympic committees: Damaris Young from Panama, Gene Sykes from the United States, and Ian Chesterman from Australia. The final nominee will join the ranks of international federation representatives and is Johan Eliasch, the president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).
Furthermore, fifteen current IOC members are nearing the end of their eight-year terms, having been elected or re-elected in 2016. They are now up for re-election for an additional eight years, taking into account age limits for the end of their mandates.
