A man accused of gold smuggling tragically took his own life by jumping from the sixth floor of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) office in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Deepak Machhindra Desai, was under investigation for his alleged involvement in gold smuggling. The incident occurred late Sunday night at the DRI office in Seminary Hills. Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death, with an accidental death case registered for further investigation. In a separate incident, Customs officials seized gold paste worth Rs 78 lakh hidden under an aircraft seat at Pune airport earlier this month.

A tragic incident unfolded late Sunday night at the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) office in the CGO Complex in Nagpur, Maharashtra. A 27-year-old man, identified as Deepak Machhindra Desai, accused of gold smuggling, took his own life by jumping from the sixth floor of the DRI office located in Seminary Hills.

Details of the Incident
An official from the Gittikhadan police station revealed that Desai had been under investigation for his alleged involvement in gold smuggling. The authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. Desai was arrested on June 14 from Sangli in connection with a case of smuggling gold from Dubai for sale in Uttar Pradesh. His associate had previously been apprehended after gold worth Rs 2 crore was discovered in a car traveling from Varanasi to Lucknow.
On the fateful night, while being questioned by DRI personnel, Desai tragically jumped out of a window. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to severe injuries. An accidental death case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
Recent Gold Smuggling Incidents
In a separate incident earlier this month, Customs officials arrested a passenger at Pune International Airport in Maharashtra after seizing gold paste worth Rs 78 lakh. The contraband was found concealed in a pipe under the aircraft seat the passenger was occupying. Despite passing personal and baggage examinations, the suspicious behavior of the passenger led to the discovery of the illicit goods.
Such incidents highlight the ongoing battle against gold smuggling in the region, with authorities remaining vigilant to prevent illegal activities and protect the integrity of the country’s borders.
