Passenger Finds Blade in Inflight Meal on Air India Flight
A passenger on a recent Air India flight from Bengaluru to San Francisco had a shocking experience when he discovered a blade in his inflight meal. Mathures Paul, the passenger in question, only found the sharp metal object after he had already taken a bite into it.
Taking to social media, Paul managed to make light of the situation, joking that “Air India cuts like a knife.” He shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) where he described the incident and included a photo of the meal before and after he discovered the blade.
“Hiding in its roasted sweet potato and fig chaat was a metal piece that looked like a blade,” Paul said. “I got a feel of it only after chewing the grub for a few seconds. Thankfully, no harm was done.” Although Paul escaped unharmed, he raised concerns about what could have happened if the meal had been served to a child.
Air India Responds to the Incident
Following Paul’s social media post, Air India reached out to him and confirmed that the metal object likely originated from the airline’s catering department. In a statement, a spokesperson for the airline explained, “Air India confirms that a foreign object was found in the meal of a guest aboard one of our flights.”
“After investigation, it has been identified as coming from the vegetable processing machine used at the facilities of our catering partner,” the spokesperson added.
Similar Incidents in the Aviation Industry
While incidents like this are rare, they are not unheard of in the aviation industry. Just last month, a passenger on a United Airlines flight from Sydney to Los Angeles claimed to have found a maggot in their inflight meal. The passenger only realized the maggot was present after taking several bites out of the pasta dish.
In another unsettling incident, a British Airways passenger claimed to have found a dental implant in her meal during a flight from London Heathrow to Dubai in December 2022. And in July 2022, a passenger on a SunExpress flight from Ankara, Turkey, to Dusseldorf found a severed snake’s head in their breakfast.
These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of quality control and food safety measures in the aviation industry. Passengers trust airlines to provide safe and hygienic meals during their flights, and any lapses in this regard can have serious consequences.
As airlines continue to prioritize passenger safety and satisfaction, it is crucial for them to conduct thorough inspections and adhere to strict standards in their catering operations to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
