JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) : “Joliet Shooting: John Hernandez Charged in Fatal Krakar Avenue Incident”

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) — A man has been charged in a deadly south suburban shooting that happened earlier this month, police said.

Joliet, a city located in the state of Illinois, was the site of a tragic incident that shook the community. The incident took place in the 400-block of Krakar Avenue, where Joliet police responded just after 11 p.m. on June 1. Upon arrival, officers discovered two gunshot victims in the front living room of a residence.

The victims included a 23-year-old man, Fernando Contreras, who tragically lost his life after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to his head. Another man, aged 27, suffered a non-life-threatening graze wound to his head and was treated at Silver Cross Hospital before being released. Additionally, a 20-year-old man sustained four gunshot wounds to his body and was taken to the same hospital in stable condition.

The investigation revealed that the gunfire originated from outside the home, striking all three victims in the front living room. Over 25 spent shell casings were found at the scene, indicating a violent and targeted attack.

Following diligent police work, a suspect, 22-year-old John Hernandez, was apprehended at his residence on Campbell Street. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection to the shooting incident.

Despite the arrest, authorities reassured the public that there is no known threat to the community at this time. However, they urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation by contacting the Joliet Police Department or Will County Crime Stoppers anonymously.
