Braves find power stroke, go for sweep of Rays
The Atlanta Braves are on a hot streak, hitting a total of six home runs in the first two games against the Tampa Bay Rays. Marcell Ozuna leads the National League with 20 homers, while Austin Riley ended a 90 at-bat homerless streak with back-to-back home runs. The Rays, on the other hand, have struggled to keep the ball in the park, allowing the most homers in the majors. The pitching matchup for the series finale features Tampa Bay’s Zach Eflin against Atlanta rookie Hurston Waldrep. The Braves recently signed veteran outfielder Ramon Laureano to fill a gap in their lineup.

The Atlanta Braves are on fire as they rediscover their home run stroke and aim for a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays. After hitting six homers in the first two games of the series, the Braves are looking to continue their power surge in the series finale on Sunday.
In Friday’s 7-3 win, the Braves hit two homers, followed by four more long balls in Saturday’s 9-2 victory. Marcell Ozuna, who leads the National League with 20 homers and 62 RBIs, homered in both games. Austin Riley also found his groove, hitting homers in consecutive games after a 90 at-bat drought without a long ball.
On the other hand, the Tampa Bay Rays have struggled to keep the ball in the park, allowing a league-leading 97 homers. Conversely, the Rays have hit the fewest homers in the American League with only 54.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the Braves’ offensive prowess, stating, “(The Braves) are just a bunch of good hitters. It was just a matter of time before they got going and unfortunately it happened when we’re in here. Offensively we’re just scuffling right now.”
The pitching matchup for the series finale features Tampa Bay’s Zach Eflin (3-4, 4.06 ERA) against Atlanta rookie Hurston Waldrep (0-1, 17.18 ERA). Eflin, who has had success against the Braves in his career with a 7-3 record and a 3.14 ERA in 17 appearances, will look to stifle Atlanta’s potent lineup.
Waldrep, making only his second major league start, will aim for a better outing after a rocky debut against the Washington Nationals. Despite a challenging first start, Braves manager Brian Snitker remains optimistic about Waldrep’s potential.
In other news, Tampa Bay’s Yandy Diaz extended his streak of reaching base to 18 consecutive games, while Randy Arozarena ended a 26-game homerless streak with his ninth homer on Saturday. The Rays are also dealing with an illness that has affected several players, including Jose Caballero and Taylor Walls.
To bolster their roster, the Braves signed veteran outfielder Ramon Laureano from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace the injured Michael Harris II. Laureano made an immediate impact, starting in right field and recording a hit in his debut with the Braves.
