2. Criminal organization involved in trafficking deceased migrants through St. Lawrence River: RCMP probe

A human trafficking ring recently uncovered by the RCMP has been linked to the tragic deaths of eight migrants who drowned in the St. Lawrence River while attempting to enter the United States illegally last year.

In March 2023, two families, consisting of four individuals from India and four individuals of Romanian descent, lost their lives while trying to cross into the United States through Akwesasne, a First Nations territory spanning Quebec, Ontario, and New York state. The bodies of the victims were recovered on March 30 and 31.

RCMP Busts Human Trafficking Ring

On June 6, law enforcement announced the arrest of four individuals, including the alleged mastermind, and issued warrants for four others. The group was believed to be part of a large-scale human trafficking operation that smuggled migrants into the United States, according to the RCMP.

Cpl. Angélique Dignard, from the RCMP’s Cornwall detachment, revealed that two of the accused individuals were involved in transporting the Indian family that tragically perished in the incident.

Victims identified

The deceased Indians were identified as members of the Chaudhari family from Gujarat, India. The family included Praveenbhai Chaudhari, 50; Dakshaben Chaudhari, 45; Meet Chaudhari, 20; and Vidhi Chaudhari, 23. On the other hand, the Romanian family consisted of Florin Iordache, 28; Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache, 28; Evelin Iordache, 2; and Elyen Iordache, 1.

Alleged Ringleaders Charged

The RCMP laid the majority of charges against the alleged ringleader, 51-year-old Thesingarasan Rasiah of Montreal, who now faces a total of 36 counts. Another Montreal resident, 38-year-old Joel Portillo, was arrested on 25 charges related to the operation.

Suspects Still at Large

While several arrests have been made, four individuals linked to the group remain at large. Authorities are actively searching for Justin Rourke, Shawna Etienne, Cheyenne Lewis, and Tionna David, among others.

Continuing Investigations

Despite the arrests, Cpl. Dignard emphasized that human trafficking remains a prevalent crime, and the RCMP will continue to investigate such activities. The Canadian Border Services Agency declined to comment on the matter, while the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for statements.

The dismantling of this human trafficking ring serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants seeking illegal entry into countries and highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat such criminal activities.
