Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office has found at least 12 bodies in the Mississippi River over the last decade. Recently, on May 1, workers on the river discovered a body floating in the water. STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. — The Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office has reported a disturbing trend in recent years: the discovery of bodies in the Mississippi River. In the last decade alone, at least 12 bodies have been found in the river, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in the area.
On May 1, workers on the Mississippi River made a grim discovery when they found a body floating in the water. The Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the situation and Chief Deputy Major Jason Schott confirmed that the body was retrieved from the river by deckhands.
According to Schott, finding bodies in the river is unfortunately not uncommon for the area. He stated, “In the last year, this is probably the second body found. In the last decade, I’d say maybe about 12 (bodies found). It’s something we’re used to that we know can happen here. And you know, we’re prepared for it.”
Following the discovery of the body, the sheriff’s office released images to the public in an effort to identify the individual. With the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the FBI, the person was identified as 23-year-old Darris Moore of north St. Louis. Surprisingly, there was no missing persons report filed at the time of Moore’s death, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

5 On Your Side spoke to individuals who knew Moore, and they revealed that Moore identified as transgender. Schott mentioned that the bodies found in the river recently have either floated down from north of Ste. Genevieve or were dumped in the river. The causes of death have varied, including suicide, undetermined circumstances, drownings, and even cases involving foul play.
Regarding Moore’s case, Schott stated that foul play is not suspected, and the department is actively investigating to determine the cause of death. He assured, “Know that we’re working on trying to determine a cause of death, and we will work that as long as we can till we exhaust all those leads.”
