SALISBURY — Law enforcement officials have taken a suspect into custody following a dramatic police pursuit that ended in a fiery crash. The incident unfolded during the early hours of Thursday morning in a remote area of Salisbury, North Carolina.

According to Chief Deputy Jason Owens of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the events commenced around 1:30 a.m. when a deputy pulled over a vehicle travelling above the speed limit on the northbound side of Interstate 85. The driver briefly stopped before abruptly accelerating away from the scene.

The ensuing chase led the suspect’s vehicle onto Long Ferry Road, ultimately veering onto Leonard Road where it careened off the roadway and crashed into the dense woodland within the 1200 block. Captain Wesley Smith, overseeing the patrol division of the sheriff’s office, reported that the vehicle burst into flames with both occupants trapped inside.

Swift action from deputies enabled the male driver, identified as 23-year-old Malik Tai Douglas, and a female passenger to escape the burning wreckage before they received medical attention from EMS personnel and were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. It was noted by Smith that the passenger, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, repeatedly implored Douglas to cease his reckless actions throughout the ordeal.

Following a brief hospitalization, Douglas attempted to abscond from medical care but was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement officers. He now faces charges of felony eluding law enforcement, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, speeding, and failing to yield for emergency sirens.

Douglas has been remanded to the Rowan County Detention Center without bail. Prior to this incident, he was out on bond for similar charges stemming from a police pursuit in Guilford County dating back to September 2023.
