The incident occurred just after 11 a.m. on Thursday when one of the men passed out and fell inside the tanker while trying to retrieve the equipment. The second man also passed out and fell in as he attempted to help his colleague. The men, identified as Nathan Doody, 33, from DeRuyter, and Tyler Memory, 29, of Tully, were not employees of Champion Farm where the incident took place.

Other workers at the farm immediately called 911, and emergency responders, including the Clinton Fire Department, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, and Mercy Flight helicopters, rushed to the scene. The men were taken to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Manure Gas Dangers

According to the Farm Safety Association, decomposing manure can produce dangerous gases such as hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. High concentrations of these gases can be fatal to both humans and livestock. Tragically, incidents involving manure gases have been reported in the past, resulting in multiple fatalities.
