Shootout in Woodbridge Leaves Two Officers Injured and Suspect Dead

The identities of the individuals involved in a dramatic shootout in Woodbridge on Thursday morning have been released by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. The incident, which took place at the Royal Albert’s Palace hotel, left two officers injured and the suspect dead.

The Incident

The suspect, identified as Karl Gregory, 46, of New York, was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in New York City. Authorities from both Woodbridge and New York City were involved in the search for Gregory when the shootout occurred.

Police officers from Edison and Woodbridge responded to the scene at the hotel after Gregory’s car was identified in the area by an Automatic License Plate Reader. When officers arrived, they found Gregory’s car unoccupied in the parking lot.

The Exchange of Gunfire

The tense situation escalated when Gregory emerged from an elevator in the hotel lobby, holding multiple bags. He dropped the bags and reached into a black backpack, prompting an exchange of gunfire between himself and the officers present.

During the exchange, Officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney from Woodbridge, along with Detective Matthew Mauro from the NYPD, were injured. Gregory was also struck during the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered near his body.

Recovery and Investigation

Officers Nerney and Mauro were both transported to a New Brunswick hospital for treatment. Mauro was released on Thursday, while Nerney was discharged on Friday. The incident remains under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, as mandated by a 2019 law regarding civilian deaths involving law enforcement.
