The bodycam footage, released by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to Fox 13, showed the grim scene with first responders arriving at a canal in Largo in September last year. A bystander raised the alarm after spotting a 4.3m alligator with what appeared to be body parts in its mouth.

“I noticed it had a body in its mouth, like a lower torso, so once I saw that, I ran straight to the fire department and got them, they confirmed it was a body,” Jamarcus Bullard told Fox 13.

Identification of the Victim

The victim was later identified as homeless woman Sabrina Peckham, who had been staying at a campsite just over 15m away from the canal where the alligator attack took place. Peckham’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through the local community.

Police Response and Recovery

In a swift response, the animal was shot dead by police with a rifle. The massive reptile was then hauled out of the waterway and cut open to retrieve Peckham’s remains. The police bodycam video captured the haunting sight of the gator surrounded by officers, its stomach visibly swollen with the victim inside.

Rare Occurrence

Fatal encounters between people and alligators are relatively rare in Florida, compared to similar incidents involving crocodiles in Australia. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Peckham is only the third person to be killed in Pinellas County in the last 50 years.
