The incident unfolded when Vancouver police received a call about a man letting his German shepherd dog run loose and reportedly carrying a firearm in the 100 block of Southeast Columbia Way. Upon arrival, officers located Sashchenko and his dog near Columbia Way and Columbia Street, where the situation escalated quickly.
Police Encounter and Fatal Shooting
According to the Vancouver Police Department news release, two officers approached Sashchenko, who allegedly pointed a firearm at them. In response, one of the officers fired, resulting in Sashchenko’s death at the scene. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave as per standard procedure.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the shooting, the aggressive dog, which had bitten one person earlier, was secured to a large garbage bin. Medical attention was sought for the bite wounds sustained during the incident. The dog was later taken to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.
