FAIRFAX, Va. – The shocking moment a suspected impaired driver crashed into a Virginia trooper’s patrol car was captured on dash cam video released by authorities. The incident took place early Tuesday morning on Interstate-495 near exit 52 in Fairfax County.

The video shows Virginia State Police Trooper C. Aziz standing next to a sedan after pulling over a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs. She was trying to get the sedan’s driver to move over to a safer location on the shoulder when a Jeep Cherokee slammed into her patrol car.

The impact of the collision pushed Aziz’s patrol vehicle into the sedan, knocking her off her feet momentarily. Despite the force of the crash, Aziz miraculously escaped without any broken bones. However, she was transported to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for evaluation and has a long road to recovery ahead.

Driver Details and Charges

The driver of the sedan, identified as 43-year-old Erica D. Bernard of Albright, West Virginia, was still inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. She suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Bernard now faces charges of driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction, possession of a schedule I or II substance, refusal of a blood/breath test, and improperly stopping a vehicle on a highway.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, 35-year-old Joanna F. Hatch of Arlington, Virginia, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Both Bernard and Hatch were taken to Fairfax County Adult Detention Center following the incident.
