The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate an incident in which a firearm was discharged at a person on Night Hawk Lake’s Moose Island in Timmins. The incident took place yesterday and involved the arrest of a man who had been on the run from police for nearly three weeks.
Details of the incident
The SIU has released preliminary information about the case, stating that the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) found 43-year-old Lucas MacDonald, who had been the subject of an intensive search since late May. During the arrest, there was an exchange of gunfire involving five officers, resulting in one officer being shot. MacDonald did not sustain any serious injuries and was subsequently arrested.
SIU investigation
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving the police where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person. In this case, four investigators and two forensic investigators are currently working on the investigation.
Officer’s condition
Following the incident, the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The arrest of Lucas MacDonald marks the end of a manhunt that began on May 23 when the body of Marcel Thoma was discovered in a wooded area in Egan Township. Since the initial investigation into Thoma’s death, MacDonald had been identified as a person of interest who may have information about the murder and was believed to be armed. The police utilized various resources, including canine units, boats, and a helicopter, in their search for MacDonald.
Area of focus
Throughout the investigation, the OPP provided updates on the increased police presence in the area, particularly along Highway 101 from Retreat Road to Shillington, and in the Municipal Road area north of Highway 101.
