ATLANTA – A man from Georgia has been arrested by the GBI in connection with a shooting death that occurred on a county transit bus, leading to a pursuit with law enforcement. The incident took place in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, and has left many shocked and saddened by the tragic events that unfolded.
Details of the Incident
The Georgia State Patrol requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 11, 2024. The suspect, identified as Joseph Grier, aged 39 and hailing from Stone Mountain, GA, was involved in a fatal altercation on a Gwinnett County Transit bus.

On that fateful Tuesday afternoon, the bus picked up passengers in downtown Atlanta, with Grier among those boarding. An argument ensued between Grier and another male passenger, resulting in a physical altercation. The situation escalated when the passenger pulled out a gun, only for Grier to disarm him and turn the weapon on the other passengers, instilling fear and chaos on board.
High-Speed Pursuit
As Grier threatened passengers and the bus driver, he proceeded to commandeer the bus and flee the scene, leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed pursuit. The bus travelled north into Gwinnett County and then east into DeKalb County, with several police vehicles sustaining damage as the chase continued.
Despite efforts to stop the bus, including flattening its tires, Grier remained determined to evade capture. A Georgia State Patrol Trooper resorted to firing his patrol rifle into the bus’s engine compartment in a bid to disable the vehicle. The pursuit finally came to an end on Hugh Howell Road in Stone Mountain, where Grier was apprehended without further incident.
Tragic Outcome
Regrettably, one passenger onboard the bus succumbed to their injuries after being shot by Grier. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Atlanta Police Department and the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
