During the busy late afternoon rush hour on Tuesday, a shocking incident unfolded in downtown Atlanta. A gunman took control of a public bus with 17 passengers on board, held the bus driver at gunpoint, and tragically shot one of the passengers.
This harrowing event sparked a high-speed police chase across two counties, leaving authorities and civilians in a state of shock and disbelief. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum described the incident as a “frightening journey” during a press conference following the ordeal.
The suspect behind the attack was identified as Joseph Grier, a 39-year-old resident of Stone Mountain. Grier was eventually apprehended by law enforcement officers after a Georgia State Patrol Trooper intervened by disabling the bus in DeKalb County.
This distressing incident came on the heels of another shooting earlier in the day at a downtown Atlanta food court, where three individuals were injured and a 34-year-old suspect was involved.

The Start of the Bus Hijacking
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that the incident began around 4:20 p.m. when a Gwinnett County Transit bus picked up passengers in downtown Atlanta. The bus stop was located a few blocks south of the Civic Center subway station and northwest of the city’s Hotel District neighborhood.
The chaos ensued when Grier, a passenger on the bus, engaged in a dispute with another male passenger who was armed. Grier seized the weapon, shot the passenger, and proceeded to threaten the remaining passengers while coercing the bus driver to flee the scene.
“Grier then shot the passenger and ordered the bus driver to flee the scene while threatening passengers with the gun,” the GBI stated.
Authorities received a 911 call reporting the armed individual on the bus holding hostages and a possible discharge of a weapon. Shortly after, a second call from a family member of a passenger on the bus confirmed the hijacking and hostage situation.
A Dramatic Police Pursuit
Local and state law enforcement agencies initiated a pursuit as the bus travelled north into Gwinnett County and then east into DeKalb County. During the chase, the bus collided with several police vehicles, escalating the tension.
Authorities deployed various tactics to halt the bus, including the use of spike strips. Despite the bus’s tires being deflated, the vehicle continued to evade capture.
Ultimately, a trooper discharged a rifle into the bus’s engine compartment, causing it to malfunction and come to a halt in Stone Mountain, approximately 21 miles northeast of the initial incident location.
Grier was apprehended without further incident, while the injured passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital and sadly pronounced dead.
Bus Driver’s Injuries and Subsequent Actions
The bus driver was also transported to a local hospital for medical attention following the traumatic event.
No additional injuries were reported by law enforcement, and the status of the bus driver’s condition post-treatment remains unknown.
Both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Atlanta police are yet to provide further updates on the incident.
