On the afternoon of November 30, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Thunder Bay Police Service responded to reports of a devastating head-on collision between a pickup truck and a sedan on Oliver Road near Highgate Road. The impact was so severe that both vehicles ended up in ditches on opposite sides of the road, causing chaos in the usually tranquil neighbourhood.

Injuries and Fatality

Emergency services rushed to the scene and worked tirelessly to extricate the lone occupant of the sedan and both occupants of the pickup truck. All three individuals were transported to the hospital with serious to potentially life-threatening injuries. Tragically, one of the pickup truck occupants, identified as 79-year-old Russell Wanzuk, later succumbed to his injuries, leaving a void in the hearts of his loved ones.

Initial charges were laid against the sedan driver, Dallas Hiebert, in November 2023.
