Theft of Copper Wires Uncovered in Dadar-Matunga Area

Recently, Mumbai Police made a significant breakthrough by apprehending a gang of thieves involved in stealing copper wires from utility cables in the bustling Dadar-Matunga area. The stolen wires, valued at Rs 6 to 7 lakh, were discreetly removed by the gang, who went undetected for a considerable period.

Discovery of the Theft

Initially, the theft went unnoticed due to the ongoing excavation work commonplace in Mumbai. Residents of Dadar and the neighbouring areas assumed the digging was part of routine infrastructure projects. It was only when Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) officials noticed hundreds of non-functional telephone lines that the theft came to light.

Investigation and Arrests

Upon receiving the report from MTNL officers, the Matunga police station swung into action. CCTV footage was reviewed, leading the authorities to a scrap dealer named Niku Chunnilal Gupta. During questioning, Gupta disclosed the involvement of Manish Jain and four other culprits, who were subsequently arrested.

Modus Operandi

The stolen copper wire, amounting to over a hundred meters in length, was recovered from the suspects. The gang’s modus operandi involved burning the cable to remove its coatings and then melting the copper for resale.
