Investigation Continues into Fatal Shooting in Corona

An investigation is ongoing into the shooting death of a woman in Corona by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy. The incident took place in the 1000 block of West 6th Street in Corona in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

State Law Requires Independent Investigation

Under California law, the California Department of Justice is responsible for investigating fatal law enforcement shootings of unarmed civilians. The DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team has initiated an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandate. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review.

Details of the Deadly Incident

According to the sheriff’s department, the fatal incident unfolded when a deputy attempted to contact multiple subjects in the area. The individuals allegedly ran off instead of cooperating with the deputy. A man from the group then lunged at the deputy, leading to a physical altercation. During the struggle, a female began assaulting the deputy, prompting him to fire his weapon. The woman was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Suspect Arrested

The unarmed man involved in the altercation was identified as Eric Nourani, a 33-year-old San Diego County resident. He was taken into custody and booked into Riverside’s Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, mayhem, and attempted murder of a police officer. Nourani has no prior criminal history in Riverside County.

Deputy and Suspect Sustain Injuries

During the altercation, the deputy sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Nourani suffered minor injuries as well. Per Riverside County Sheriff’s Department policy, the deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
