The peaceful waters of Adam’s Bayou in Pinehurst, Texas, took a somber turn on June 1 when a kayaker stumbled upon the belongings of a deceased male. Little did they know, this discovery would lead to the identification of Niaja Cormier, a Houston resident originally from Lafayette, LA.
Identification and Investigation
Upon receiving a call from a local resident about the unusual findings in the bayou, Pinehurst Police quickly sprang into action. Car keys, tennis shoes, and identification belonging to Mr. Cormier were recovered, prompting the authorities to notify his next of kin. The missing person report filed by Beaumont PD on May 29, 2024, added a sense of urgency to the investigation.

A metal vehicle visor-clip with the words “St. Joseph Motorist’s Prayer” and a vehicle nameplate bearing the word “CHEYENNE” were among the items found on the deceased man. Pinehurst Police shared details of a tattoo on the man’s chest in hopes of identifying him, emphasising that the photos provided were recreations due to the faint nature of the tattoo.
Discovery of the Body
The grim discovery was made by fishermen who came across the deceased male in Adam’s Bayou. Upon receiving the report, Pinehurst officers, along with Orange County Emergency Services District 3, rushed to the scene south of the Interstate 10 turnaround. Justice of the Peace Hershel Stagner ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
