The man who tragically passed away while attempting to rescue his dog near the Thiensville Dam on the Milwaukee River has been identified as Aleksandr “Alex” Melnikov, 52, of Mequon. His body was recovered after a two-day search and rescue effort involving multiple agencies. Described as a generous soul who valued relationships, Melnikov was an electrician with a business serving clients in Ozaukee County and the North Shore of Milwaukee. His son, Vlad Melnikov, shared that his father had a deep bond with his 3-year-old chocolate lab, Kobe, who is still missing. The family is requesting donations in Alex Melnikov’s memory to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

Alex Melnikov had always dreamed of having a dog like Kobe who was always right at his side, his son Vlad Melnikov told the Ozaukee Press. “Those two were inseparable,” he said.

The man who tragically lost his life while trying to save his beloved dog near the Thiensville Dam on the Milwaukee River has been identified.

The body of Aleksandr “Alex” Melnikov, 52, from Mequon, was recovered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Southern Ozaukee Fire Department in the evening on Friday, June 7, after an extensive two-day search and rescue operation that involved over a dozen entities and utilized both drones and sonar technology.

Melnikov was officially identified by the Ozaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office on June 10.

Family members, friends, and clients are honouring Melnikov’s memory as a man with a kind heart who cherished his connections with others, as shared by his son, Vlad Melnikov, in an interview with the Ozaukee Press.

Melnikov, who ran his own electrical business serving clients in Ozaukee County and the North Shore of Milwaukee, was a dedicated individual who cared deeply for his community.

Before the tragic incident, Alex was enjoying a game of ball at Thiensville Village Park with his cherished 3-year-old chocolate lab named Kobe.

As of midday Tuesday, Kobe remains missing, and the Melnikov family appeals to the public to continue their search efforts. If anyone locates him, they are urged to contact their local nonemergency police number, Vlad advised.

“Those two were always by each other’s side,” Vlad expressed to the Ozaukee Press.

Vlad described his father as a diligent worker, tending to his property by planting trees, maintaining a flourishing garden, and constructing paths through the woods. He was in the process of constructing a chicken coop before the tragic incident.

The family requests that any donations made in Alex Melnikov’s memory be directed to the Ozaukee Campus of the Wisconsin Humane Society.
