Three Arrested in Connection with Cocaine Seizure in East El Paso

In a recent development in East El Paso, three men have been charged with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance after a significant seizure of 4.8 kilograms of cocaine. The incident unfolded following high-speed evasion attempts that culminated in a crash near Chito Samaniego Drive and a disabled vehicle on Gateway East Boulevard.

Undercover Operation Leads to Arrests

The investigation was initiated after Homeland Security Investigations agents received information that Alejandro Torres was in possession of over 4 kilos of cocaine. Undercover agents made contact with Torres and arranged to purchase the cocaine for $50,000. During recorded conversations, Torres referred to the kilos as mochilitas (little backpacks).

Torres and a driver identified as Ricardo Isael Martinez met with undercover agents in the parking lot of a hotel in the 11400 block of Chito Samaniego Drive in East El Paso. Torres indicated that a second vehicle would bring the cocaine to the parking lot. Subsequently, a white BMW driven by Alan Daniel Mendoza Cardiel arrived with four cellophane-wrapped bundles of cocaine in the trunk.

Arrests and High-Speed Pursuit

Law enforcement officials intervened when the undercover agent signaled for action, prompting the suspects to attempt an escape. Mendoza sped off in the BMW but crashed down the road into a vehicle driven by an HSI agent and was apprehended. Meanwhile, Torres and Martinez fled in a Nissan Altima, engaging in a high-speed pursuit with a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

Legal Proceedings

An arraignment for the three men has been scheduled for June 18 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jose A. Torres in El Paso. The charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance carry serious legal consequences, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
