The Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura’s Sepahijala district shot dead an alleged Bangladeshi smuggler near the India-Bangladesh border. The deceased was found with sacks of sugar on the Indian side. The BSF jawans encountered a group of armed smugglers attempting to cross the border, leading to a confrontation where the BSF jawan fired in self-defence. Despite using non-lethal weapons initially, the BSF constable was forced to use his service rifle, resulting in the death of one smuggler. The deceased was identified as Anwar Hussain, 35, from Bangladesh. This incident follows a previous attack on a BSF constable by the same group of smugglers.

The Border Security Force (BSF) Kills Alleged Bangladeshi Smuggler in Tripura
The Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead an alleged Bangladeshi smuggler near the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Sunday. The incident took place near the Kalamchoura Border Out Post (BOP) in a remote area where smuggling activities are rampant.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, BSF jawans were conducting an area domination march around 7:30 am when they spotted a large group of smugglers armed with sharp-edged weapons on either side of the border fence. The smugglers were attempting to smuggle goods across the international border.
When the BSF jawans asked the smugglers to stop, they refused and became aggressive. They tried to encircle a BSF jawan with the intent to assault him and snatch his weapon. In self-defence, the BSF jawan fired one round from a Pump Action Gun (PAG) but was unsuccessful in thwarting the smugglers.
After a brief scuffle, the BSF constable was forced to fire one round from his service INSAS rifle. This resulted in the death of one Bangladeshi smuggler who was found about 150 yards inside Indian territory.

Seizure of Contraband
Following the incident, a thorough search was conducted in the area. A significant quantity of sugar, four machetes, and wooden planks were seized from the spot where the smuggler was shot dead. The deceased was later identified as Anwar Hussain, a 35-year-old resident of Mirpur in Bangladesh’s Comilla district.
Previous Incidents
It is worth noting that a similar incident involving the same group of Bangladeshi smugglers occurred earlier this month in the same area. The BSF claimed that the smugglers had brutally assaulted a BSF constable and attempted to drag him towards the Bangladesh side. They had even managed to snatch the constable’s weapon and radio set during the confrontation.
These incidents highlight the challenges faced by the BSF in curbing smuggling activities along the India-Bangladesh border. The remote and porous nature of the border makes it a hotspot for illegal activities, posing a constant threat to the security forces deployed in the region.
As investigations continue into the latest incident, the BSF remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard the country’s borders and prevent cross-border crimes.
