Three Dead, Four Injured in Tragic Road Accident in Mangochi
In a devastating turn of events, three individuals lost their lives while four others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred in the early hours of today at Namiyasi Trading Centre along the Mangochi-Monkey Bay Road.
The tragic incident involved a Toyota Pick-up registration number NS 9533, which was being driven by Michael Damiano, 38. The vehicle was travelling from Monkey Bay towards Mangochi boma enroute to Blantyre with a total of 10 passengers on board.
Mangochi Police Station spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed the details of the accident, revealing that the deceased individuals were well-known fresh fish businessmen. The victims have been identified as Karim Steven, 42, Wasili Nakoma, 38, and Stanley Chiwanda, 47.
According to Daudi, “Upon arrival at Namiyasi Trading Centre, Damiano lost control of the motor vehicle and swerved to the offside of the road, leading to the tragic collision with a tree.”

Following the impact of the accident, the three passengers sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mangochi District Hospital. The remaining four passengers suffered various degrees of injuries and have been admitted to the same medical facility for treatment. Fortunately, three passengers and the driver escaped with minor injuries.
Steven and Nakoma both hailed from Steven Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chowe in the district, while Chiwanda was a resident of Chipalamawamba Village, T/A Mponda in the same area.
