On the evening of June 5, at around 8:08 pm, the West Virginia State Police received a distressing call about an assault at the recycling center. When troopers rushed to the scene, they discovered Billy Wayne Palmer, a 42-year-old resident of Hugheston, West Virginia, lying on the ground, his face and head severely lacerated.
Despite the best efforts of the authorities, the assailant had already fled the premises by the time they arrived. Palmer was swiftly taken to CAMC General Hospital, where he was admitted with life-threatening injuries.

In the early hours of June 6, the suspect was identified as 72-year-old William Holt Cobb from Winfield, West Virginia. After an intensive search, law enforcement officers managed to locate Cobb and take him into custody without any resistance.
