As an exchange student in the 1970s and later as a resident in the 1990s, I witnessed the evolution of Hong Kong amidst calls for greater democracy. Despite recent challenges, Hong Kong remains a vibrant international city with a high level of English proficiency among its residents, making it a unique hub in Asia. With a diverse expatriate population, Hong Kong offers a welcoming environment with no internet restrictions and a free media landscape. The city’s judiciary, civil service, and police force uphold world-class standards, ensuring fair treatment for all. Moving forward, supporting Hong Kong’s autonomy and unique role in East Asia is crucial for its continued prosperity and international standing.
