The tragic incident took place outside the Fareway Meat and Grocery located at 420 North Farley St. in Monticello. On November 7, 2023, Monticello Police Department officers responded to a report of a man being shot. Witnesses reported seeing McAtee shot by a rifle pointed out of the driver’s window of a black sedan with Illinois license plates.

Further investigation revealed that Russell had stopped by the supermarket shortly after the shooting, leading authorities to identify him as a person of interest. A Delaware County deputy later found Russell in Hopkinton, approximately 10 miles away from Monticello.

Russell was shot by the deputy after allegedly failing to comply with directions. Following his recovery, he was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in connection with McAtee’s death.
