In the early hours of Tuesday morning, tragedy struck in the Kansas City area as one person lost their life in a fatal accident during a pursuit by law enforcement.

The Incident

At around 3 a.m., a State trooper attempted to pull over a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 31-year-old Austin M. Brewer from Kansas City on U.S. 40 at South Crysler Avenue in Independence. The driver had reportedly committed lane violations and was suspected of driving under the influence.

As the trooper initiated the stop, Brewer refused to comply and a pursuit ensued. Independence Police officers successfully deployed spike strips on South Sterling Avenue just south of E 23rd Street in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle.

The Tragic Outcome

Tragically, at 2:51 a.m., Brewer lost control of the Jeep, crashing into a utility pole. The impact was fatal, and Brewer was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle, identified as 35-year-old Kassitie L. Murphy from Independence, Missouri, was rushed to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment.
