The 24-year-old victim, Saad Ahmed, was shot by the 35-year-old guard, Ahmed Gul. The incident occurred within the Taimooria police station’s jurisdiction, and the guard has been apprehended. This is not the first TikTok-related accident in Pakistan, as three young men lost their lives while filming a video in Punjab last year. The use of TikTok has been declared illegal and ‘haram’ by a religious school in Karachi, citing reasons such as spreading obscenity and immorality. Religious scholars have been advocating for bans on TikTok due to its negative impact on society.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central revealed that the fatal shooting took place within the jurisdiction of the Taimooria police station. The security guard, who was employed by a private security company, claimed that Saad had made provocative gestures towards him while filming the video. The guard’s firearm, with the serial number ‘222’, was confiscated by the police for further investigation.

This unfortunate incident is not the first TikTok-related accident to occur in Pakistan. Last year, three young men lost their lives in a similar incident in the Sheikhupura district of Punjab. The victims, residents of Khanqah Dogran city, were filming a TikTok video on a motorcycle when they collided with a car, resulting in their tragic deaths.

In response to the growing popularity of TikTok in Pakistan, Jamia Binoria Town, a prominent religious school in Karachi, issued a fatwa declaring the use of the platform illegal and ‘haram’. The fatwa cited various reasons for its stance, including the app’s promotion of indecent content and mockery of scholars and religion.

The religious scholars at Jamia Binoria emphasised that TikTok poses a significant threat as a ‘fitna’ in the modern age and is considered forbidden from a Shariah perspective. The fatwa condemned the creation and dissemination of obscene videos on the platform, as well as the practice of men and women engaging in dancing and singing videos.

In 2021, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority imposed a five-month ban on TikTok due to concerns about the spread of immoral content on the platform. The ban was lifted after TikTok provided assurances that it would enhance measures to control indecent material. However, religious scholars continue to call for stricter regulations on TikTok to prevent the spread of immorality in society.

As the investigation into Saad Ahmed’s tragic death continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with social media platforms like TikTok. The incident has sparked a debate on the impact of such platforms on society and the need for greater awareness of responsible online behaviour.
