Stafford County, VA — Man Tries to Avoid DUI Charge in Fredericksburg

A 66-year-old man from Fredericksburg attempted to evade a DUI charge by switching seats with his passenger but was ultimately unsuccessful. The incident took place on May 31 at around 5:50 p.m. when Deputy J.L. Jones observed a blue Nissan swerving across both southbound lanes on Richmond Highway near Rappahannock Regional Jail. The erratic driving caught the attention of Deputy Jones, who then received a dispatch report regarding a drunk driver complaint involving the same vehicle.

As the vehicle nearly collided with two separate cars, Deputy Jones conducted a traffic stop near Sage Lane. To his surprise, both occupants of the vehicle exited and attempted to switch seats in a blatant effort to deceive the authorities. Despite their quick maneuver, Deputy Jones caught onto their trick and approached the vehicle.

The original driver, now seated in the passenger seat, emitted a strong smell of alcohol and provided three different fake identities to the officer. However, his true identity was eventually revealed, showing a suspended license due to a prior DUI offence. The driver confessed to having consumed “two beers,” and an open can of Four Loko was discovered in the vehicle.

As a result of his actions, the driver was charged with driving under the influence, driving after license forfeiture, falsely identifying himself to law enforcement, a traffic lane violation, drinking while driving, and refusal to comply with the authorities. He was subsequently held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until he sobered up.
