Denver Man Accused of Attempted Murder and Animal Cruelty in Berthoud
A Denver man has been accused of attempted murder and animal cruelty after a harrowing incident in downtown Berthoud, Colorado. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office alleges that the man tried to run over a deputy, causing a crash that resulted in injuries to himself, his passengers, and the tragic death of a dog.
High-Speed Chase Leads to Tragic Crash
Just after midnight on May 18, a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a sedan near Interstate 25 and Highway 56 in Johnstown with no license plates. When the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver of the sedan chose to flee, heading west on Highway 56 into Berthoud at speeds exceeding 100 mph.
As the situation escalated, another deputy prepared to use tire spikes to stop the vehicle at the intersection of 1st Street and Mountain Avenue in downtown Berthoud. However, the driver of the sedan reportedly swerved towards the deputy, forcing the law enforcement officer to move out of the way to avoid being hit. The driver then swerved again, causing his vehicle to roll and land on a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office K9 vehicle, totaling it in the process.
Injuries and Loss
After the crash, deputies were able to extract three individuals from the car: the driver, identified as 38-year-old Van Radley of Denver, and two passengers. All three occupants sustained injuries in the accident and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, a dog riding in the suspect’s car did not survive the crash.

Legal Ramifications
Authorities discovered that Radley had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from Larimer County and a felony parole hold warrant from Weld County at the time of the incident. Following his release from the hospital, Radley was taken into custody and transferred to the Weld County Jail. He faces a litany of charges, including first-degree attempted murder, second-degree kidnapping, aggravated cruelty to animals, and more.
Radley remains incarcerated at the Weld County Jail, with a bond set at $75,000 cash or surety. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 5.
